Organic. Some people see dollar signs and roll their eyes, while others applaud as they have sworn off pesticide laden food forever. But, should you eat organic? Let me make the argument to eat organic. As agriculture grew in the United States, methods to protect the crop from insects increased. Why did insects want to eat the crop? Well, when soil is deficient in necessary minerals, the crop becomes sick and insects are actually MORE attracted to them. So, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides were invented to keep crops from being eaten! So, these chemicals entered our bodies for the first time in our existence of mankind and well… they aren’t so great.
However, I get it, organic is expensive, super expensive! So here are some tricks:
- Only buy organic when you eat the skin of the fruit or veggie. When you don’t eat the skin, you can usually go non-organic.
- Buy organic for fatty meats because hormone and chemically treated animals store toxins in their fat, just like humans.
- For non-organic food, wash with vegetable wash, which will help remove chemicals from fruit and veggies. Even organic foods are good to wash in case there was a non-organic farm close by.
