There’s a Seaweed That Tastes Like Bacon!

seaweed that tastes like bacon

Like a lot of people, you might be a big fan of bacon. However processed meat, including bacon, is not good for you at all. Wouldn’t it be great if you could get that taste without the increased mortality risk?

Well, you might be in luck. Researchers at Oregon State University have recently created a new patented strain on red algae that actually tastes like bacon when it’s cooked. The red algae is called Dulse and is found on the northern coasts of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. While it’s commonly consumed in Northern Europe, the trend hasn’t yet caught on in the U.S.

The bacon taste might change that thought. The health benefits aren’t too shabby either. It’s “an excellent source of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants – and it contains up to 16 percent protein.” The researchers also claim that it has “twice the nutritional value of kale.”

Dulse

How do you get your hands on this bacon seaweed? The researchers have partnered with a local chef who is beginning to use the Dulse strain in a number of recipes. Some of the more popular products so far are “veggie burgers, trail mix, and even dulse beer.” While the particular strain isn’t available in other markets yet, you can buy dulse online. Don’t be surprised if you see the Oregon State strain in stores soon though, MBA students at the University are currently working on commercializing it.
